I like how you can ask teachers for or about work if you don't have it or have a question about it. I also like answering classmates' questions if they need help.

I like how you can communicate with your peers and teachers. I also like how you can take assessments on it too, so you won't have to write. -Josiah
If you did not right down your homework you can look at it on Edmodo and you can view your test scores.

That it like Facebook and you can get it on your phone.

I like Edmodo because it has all my teachers and when there is something big like a project or something it reminds me and it also gets me organized a little bit more. I like how we take a test on there and when we are finished it gives us our answers right away to show us what we got. -Keely
To be honest I do not like Edmodo whatsoever. I mean it's perfect for people who have a computer working. But if I don't then you are screwed. And if you lose a password you lose points in school. It is a good system but it has too many possible flaws. And I would rather have printed work.

The comments above are some opinions collected from my 8th grade students about our use of Edmodo s a team. As you can see, there's always one student who doesn't like what we're using. By the way, regardless of what Carlos posted, we never set up assignments that they absolutely needed Edmodo for and didn't have access to help if he got stuck. He just wasn't that great with keeping up with assignments. All projects came with paper versions of the rubric, directions, etc.
We set the groups up in Edmodo for each class. 3 of their 4 content area teachers were set up as 'Teachers' in the group. This allowed us all to post to the group, create assignments, and send messages to their parents.
It worked extremely well, because we all knew what assignments the students have at any given time. All major projects are posted to the site. As a group, we knew what major assignments the students have in US History, RELA, and Science on a daily basis. It allowed us to extend the learning beyond the classroom with links to articles, websites, and additional resources. The students also turned in assignments using the features of the site, and complete assessments electronically. As you can see, they loved the ability to be tested and see how well they performed immediately. It lead to some interesting learning conversations that I have never had before, as the students identify their mistakes or celebrate their successes. The students helped one another with assignments and will share any interesting resources they have found like YouTube videos and articles. It was a really great addition to our workflow.
One of the most interesting results of our use of Edmodo was the level of communication we had with the students. They felt comfortable contacting their teachers at any time with questions. I went to the ASCD conference in LA this past spring. While I was there, the students sent me questions they had about the work they were meant to do in class. The staff members with me at the conference were amazed at the level of communication I was able to have with the students on such a regular basis.
The one thing we will have to change for the coming school year is how we communicate electronically with parents. Middle school students are notorious for their disorganization. This unfortunately leads to them losing every single piece of paper they are given in school. And projects? Forget about it. Their parents learn about those the day before any due date. I think Remind will be useful for us to manage this process. Next year at the beginning of the year I will have all parents sign up for service so that we can better communicate with them.
So, there you have it. One great hub for disseminating information and interacting with the students.
